Art not long past. Collection in Museum
A status symbol, an investment, a passion or a bad habit – what is a collection for a collector? According to Walter Benjamin, collecting is a special kind of experience – utopian, sentimantal and a very intimate one. Is then a collector a romantic hero?
Art not long past. Collection in muzeum is a collection of various essays about collections, their creators and roles in society. There is, among others, a story how the collections of the Cracow family of Bartoszewicz remained in Łódź and a reflection on collectors passion of the Łódź bourgeoisie: was art treated as means of 'immediate social elevation' or invested in for more intriguing reasons? There is also an analysis of the process of transforming private collections into national heritage. Finally, there are texts reporting the complex stories of the paintings from the Herbst Palace Museum collection.
