Commotion

The exhibition was the result of cooperation between Muzeum Sztuki and the Strzemiński Academy of Art Łódź and a series of workshops organized by both institutions.

It was the fourth time Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź undertook cooperation with the Strzemiński Academy of Art Łódź, creating the opportunity for students to cooperate with artists and curators as part of an artistic and educational project. The series of open classes introduced young artists both in theoretical and practical aspects of activities in the field of contemporary art. The fourth edition was devoted to performativity, choreography and corporality in visual arts practices.

In 2019, the students collaborated with Iza Szostak, choreographer, performer, and dancer. The starting point for discussions and activities within the framework of the workshops were the issues of performativity and choreography, as well as corporeality and movement. As part of movement exercises, the students worked with an object, glance, body, time and space, thus opening up to an experiment and testing work methods based on the process.

Starting from seemingly basic questions related to how an idea gets materialized and how to activate its resonance in recipients, the project participants were to consider the exhibition not as a collection of objects, but as a situation in which the viewer's attentiveness is built. Together, they were wondering how to dynamize the relationship between the creative process and the mark it left, i.e. visual artefact. The reference points outlined in this way built the dynamics of discussion during the workshops. The exhibition was a space for continuous activation of the network of relations that are created between the materiality of works, the diversity of themes and meanings, looking at things, receiving, and ways of moving and being moved.
