Correspondences. Modern Art and Universalism
An impressive, almost 1000-page compendium of modern and contemporary art. The catalogue accompanying the most important exhibition of the 2012/2013 season, presenting two collections: the one of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź initiated by the “a.r.” group and the Bernese one, created by a Swiss entrepreneur and art collector Hermann Rupf. It includes the works of e.g.: Picasso, Leger, Klee, Warhol, Kandinsky, Oppenheim, Bourgeois, Kantor, Witkacy, Strzemiński. The catalogue reproduces the structure of the exhibition that orders the artworks in arcades inspired by Walter Benjamin’s philosophy y combining the works from both collections. The publication contains texts introducing the history of both collections and explaining the conception behind their arrangement. For a reader, an interesting move was introducing a dialectical speaker, Tomasz Kozak, who enters a dialogue with the curators’ conception. Each of the works is accompanied by a content commentary and information about its author.
