MODERNISATIONS: Modernism and Constructing Polish Visual Identity of a Country on the Sea, a lecture by Małgorzata Omilanowska

Architecture and art. played an important part in creating the image of a reborn Polish country during the inter-war period. One of the most important elements of the image was portraying Poland as a sea power. Polish architects and designers faced the task of designing spas, yacht marinas, luxurious hotels, resort villa districts, exclusive interiors of Polish transatlantic ships and visual settings for grand events and marine celebrations. Modernism had become a distinguishing feature of the visual construction of Poland as a country in the sea.


Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska (Institute of Art., Polish Academy of Sciences) is an art. historian, a graduate of Warsaw University; she also studied at the Technical university of Berlin, the Department of Architecture.
