Museum as a Luminous Object of Desire

December 6th, 2006 – April 2nd, 2007

Is it possible to discuss with museum? The answer is yes. The most active artists of young generation: Michał Budny, Hubert Czerepok, Oskar Dawicki, Elżbieta Jabłońska, Leszek Knaflewski, Jarosław Kozakiewicz, Kamil Kuskowski, Łukasz Ogórek & Tomasz Kaczkowski, Zbigniew Rogalski, Julita Wójcik and Zorka Wollny will rise to speak.

This exposition confronts museum – as a complex set of filing, presentation and artifact interpretation practices, and in case of museums of art as a final instance to grant an art work status - with a series of artistic activities that are challenging for routines and conventions. The exhibition in its first part presents artistic interventions in the museum practices: criticism of procedures (Czerepok), deceitful interference in the permanent exposition (Jabłońska), ironic play with discourse (Kuskowski) or with the accessibility standards (Kanflewski), or Second part juxtaposes phantasmic visions of museum or projects (Budny & Rogalski, Wójcik, Kozakiewicz) with visions, which supposed to be realized in the near future (Muzeum Kantora in Cracow, Muzeum Sztuki in Manufacture). The last group of works is considerations of the memory (Dawicki), an attempt to “expose” a new director (Wójcik), but also an ironic warning against objectification and dehumanization (Ogórek & Kaczkowski). Work of Jakubowicz, which is not a direct interference into museum discourse or procedures, comments a concrete situation of the Muzeum Sztuki.
Both artistic interventions in the existing structure as well as less or more real visions of the possible constructions are the question of both architecture and institutional shape of “desired” or “dream” museum.
