Nowosielski in Łódź
In connection with the centennial of Jerzy Nowosielski's birth, the Museum of Art is taking part in commemorating the work of this one of the most interesting Polish artists of the 20th century by recalling this twelve-year period of his life in Lodz. The years 1950 - 1962, which Jerzy Nowosielski spent in Lodz, coincided with the time of his creative maturation. This is the time when the artist achieves his first successes. He also discovers himself as a scenographic artist. Finally, it's a period when the artist begins work on monumental sacred painting. In his Lodz years, the artist also became significantly involved in the city's artistic community.

Nowosielski was twenty-seven years old when he arrived in Lodz, married to Zofia Gutkowska, and already had a number of artistic experiences behind him. Among other things, he studied icon-writing at the Uniovskaya Lavra of St. John the Baptist in Uniov near Lviv, or assisted under Tadeusz Kantor at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Krakow. In addition, the artist was associated with the Group of Young Visual Artists, formed around Kantor, as well as the Group of Modern Visual Artists and the Cracow Artists' Club. He also had a history of participation in group art shows, most notably the Modern Visual Artists exhibition at the Young Artists and Scientists Club in 1947, the Polish Art Today exhibition in New York (1948) or the First Exhibition of Modern Art at Krakow's Palace of Art (1948/1949).
During the Lodz period, these subjects of interest to Nowosielski included, in addition to the abstract compositions he continued to create, including unique organic ones, his struggle with realism.
Throughout the Lodz period, however, he continually created "realistic" works: nudes, scenes depicting women on the beach, gymnasts and swimmers, genre scenes in interiors, portraits, groups with musicians, still lifes and landscapes, sacred painting, stage sets and, above all, urban, Lodz landscapes.However, Nowosielski was able to find his own style in his canvases.It could be called conscious modern primitivism, in which objects do not lose their reality. That is why Nowosielski's paintings are easily communicative and sometimes graceful.
Nowosielski, living in Lodz, initially made his living from his position as artistic director of the state Directorate of Puppet Theaters, later as a lecturer at the State Higher School of Fine Arts, and also from his full-time position at the Municipal Design Office in Lodz for color design of facades. It was during his Lodz period that the artist had the chance to participate in the exhibition of Polish artists at the XXVIII Venice Art Biennale in 1956. He leaves the city in September 1962, just before he turned forty. From then until his death, he has been associated with Krakow, where he works at the Academy of Fine Arts.
The Lodz period exhibition includes a selection of mainly painting works by Jerzy Nowosielski. Some of them, from private collections in Lodz, will be presented to a wider audience for the first time. A separate part of the exhibition includes scenographic projects, including those prepared with his wife.
The collection of the Museum of Art in Lodz currently includes twenty-six works by Jerzy Nowosielski, including eleven from his time in Lodz.Most were acquired directly from the author at the time of their creation or shortly thereafter, in the 1960s and 1970s. This exhibition at the Museum of Art in Lodz is the first devoted exclusively to the art of this artist.
The task: publication and organization of the exhibition "Nowosielski in Lodz" was subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
