Peter Downsbrough. Position

March 23rd, 2004 - May 9th, 2004

Peter Downsborough was born in 1940 in New York, NY. He lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

The exhibition Peter Downsborough. Position at the Muzeum Sztuki is the first retrospective display of his oeuvre. The whole spectrum of the oeuvre is shown: wall and room pieces, sculptures, objects, maquettes, photographs, films, books, prints, drawings, works on maps and postcards. Using all those media the artist aims at analysing relationships between space, language and thought. The exhibition’s title work Position rises a question of ways in which the viewer situates herself or himself both in the space of the work and in space in general, for instance, in the exhibition space, city space or even life space. The question of locating in space is crucial to the whole display.

The Muzeum Sztuki has organized the show in cooperation with the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels and Espace de l’Art Concret, Mouans-Sartoux where the display was already presented last year and with Mamco (Musée d’art moderne et contemporaine), Geneve, where it will be transferred after. Despite of the fact that the similiar seclection of work is presented in all those places, each exhibition is individual and special. Peter Downsborough not only arranges the whole display in the space but also makes some of them on the site (wall and room pieces). For the exhibition in the Muzeum Sztuki the artist has prepared unique works, some of them in Polish.
