Stephen Kaltenbach. Meeting with the Artist
ms², Ogrodowa 19, audiovisual room
14 October 2016, Friday at18:00 hrs, admission free
Stephen Kaltenbach (*1940), who lives in California, is a pioneering conceptual artist. His works were included in the major exhibitions of conceptual art across the world: When Attitudes Become Form (Bern and London, 1969), Information (New York, 1970), 955,000 (New York, 1970). Since 1970 he has also been active as an academic teacher and, as he himself claims, he creates conceptual art ‘in hiding’.
At the meeting, the artist will discuss his oeuvre against changes in American art that took place in the second half of the 1960s. He will speak, e.g., about Time Capsules, a series of works initiated in 1967 and composed of metal containers with inscriptions, which inform about their content or instruct how they should be used and applied outside of institutional and commercial markets. Other Kaltenbach’s masterpieces, often featuring anonymously in public space, questioned commercial nature of artworks and highlighted their active aspects relevant in specific contexts.
The meeting announces a comprehensive solo exhibition of the artist’s works planned in Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in spring 2017. It will be the first solo show of Steven Kaltenbach’s art in Poland.
