Digital Sharing of Resources of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź - information about the project

Internal analyzes at the museum have shown that the institution has resources that require supplementation with appropriate technical and IT infrastructure. Extremely rapid technical, technological and civilizational progress, especially in the field of information and communication technologies, requires constant adaptation of the infrastructure of entities providing online cultural goods to the changing reality. Therefore, in order to meet these challenges and actively co-create an open space for sharing cultural goods, the museum must constantly invest in the latest technical and organizational solutions in this field. The server and IT resources available before the project implementation did not allow for the creation of a sufficiently advanced system for disseminating publications and increasing the efficiency of digitization works (digitization of a larger number of objects).

The specific goals of the implemented project include:

1. Digitization and access to data that do not exist before in digital form and/or are not available via the Internet.

2. Integration of data at the substantive and structural level to ensure high-quality access to this content and the possibility of its subsequent presentation in the widest possible range of possible applications.

3. Creation of a repository of digitized works and modernization of software.

The project implementation aims to achieve the following socio-economic effects:

1. Providing access to data resources that have not been previously available digitally or, despite digitization, have not been made available in a form that allows connection with other sources of this type.
2. Obtaining by communities of professionals and creators (artists, animators, or other co-participating entities) tools that integrate data and facilitate joint activities. The audience will gain access to professional knowledge.
3. Stopping the threat of damage or destruction of valuable collections owned by the Museum.
4. Ensuring the possibility of repeated use of resources, without affecting the state of preservation of the goods; implementing in practice the foundations of the idea of a modern "virtual museum".

The planned IT activities will result in the creation of an IT system integrating and making available data from the museum's resources. An appropriate data and metadata schema will bind data from various museum sources. They will be used by both internal users, i.e. museum employees (working on source files of digitized works or managing data sets using the museum's IT system), as well as external users - the public and researchers (by gaining access to presentations via the website, access to digitized works) as well as - network services, such as API and finally digital integrations, which will allow the system to cooperate with national repositories (including the KRONIK@ project) in terms of sharing data and metadata.

Tools and applications integrated as part of the project will allow to obtain new data and collect information from outside or from further digitization activities in the future. The most important effects resulting from these activities include: 1) making cultural resources available online, 2) eliminating social barriers related to the availability of resources with great artistic and educational potential, 3) improving access to cultural resources for people with disabilities, 4) eliminating the barrier of space and time in free access to digitized materials, 5) increasing the number of new downloads/reproductions of museum resources, 6) securing museum cultural resources by preparing their digital representation and metadata description, 7) enabling the re-use of these resources, and finally: 8) popularizing cultural resources with of great historical, educational and artistic value.
