Development of the collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź - 11th edition

A permanent point of reference in building the collection is the program of temporary exhibitions. Every year, purchases are made taking into account the works presented as part of the museum's projects. We continue this line with the current collection expansion project. We are supplementing the collection of works already shown at exhibitions at MS - works by Michael Stevenson, Kameelah Janan Rasheeda, Cian Dayrit and Diana Lelonek shown at the collective exhibition "The Earth is Flat Again".

An important element of this year's list is a collection of works related to the underground of the late 1980s and 1990s. The works of artists emerging from Totart have not been represented in public collections until now, but they constitute an increasingly present context for research on Polish culture of the 1980s. We continue the strategy initiated last year supplementing the collection with works from this circle. The selection of works is based on long cooperation with the authors in order to best present this trend, which is important for Polish culture. What is also unique is the opportunity to expand the field of conversation about the past in contact with living creators. We would like to supplement the works of artists associated with Luxus in Wrocław that are still missing from the institution's collections. Paweł Jarodzki's works have been carefully selected to present the specificity of the activities of this unique group. The collections of painters from the Warsaw Gruppa also need to be supplemented. Hence the presence of Paweł Kowalewski's work. These works will also be presented at the "Tectonic Movements" exhibition scheduled for autumn 2022, which will focus on Polish art during the political transformation period.

We are also continuing to acquire the legacy of Stanisław and Margarete Kubicki. In 2021, the museum added 3 works from this collection. This year we plan to purchase a completely unique example of glass painting. The museum systematically acquires artists' archives. After the extensive collections of Andrzej Partum and Leopold Buczkowski, it was time for another legendary figure. The Eugeniusz Rudnik Archive, which Muzeum Sztuki intends to purchase, is a continuation of the mission of collecting the legacy of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio.

As part of the eleventh edition of the project in 2022, the purchase of 27 works is planned - 7 Polish artists (Katarzyna Górna, Paweł Jarodzki, Paweł Kowalewski, Stanisław Kubicki, Diana Lelonek, Paweł Paulus Mazur, Eugeniusz Rudnik), as well as 9 artists from abroad (Anna Daučiková, Cian Dayrit, Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky, Margerate Kubicka, Lada Nakonechna, Jumana Manna, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Michael Stevenson). Co-financing from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage - PLN 1,000,000.00, co-financing from the Marshal's Office of the Lodzkie Region - PLN 178,000.00.
