Development of the "International Collection of 20th and 21st Century Art" Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź - 10th edition

A priority for the expansion of the 20th and 21st century Art Collection is reference to how avant-garde art is transformed, developed and updated in contemporary art. The avant-garde, due to its fundamental role for the collections and institution of Muzeum Sztuki, defines the fundamental perspective for theoretical reflection, research projects and curatorial explorations, on the basis of which we outline the directions for the expansion of the collections, while remaining sensitive to the social and political reception and perception of art. Equally important is the assumption about the social responsibility of art and the need to participate in the transformation of reality. The contemporary art context gives a new meaning to the works of avant-garde and modern art in the Collection, which does not petrify but redefines their historical and artistic rank by activating subsequent layers of their critical potential. Taking into account the experience of Muzeum Sztuki, it can be concluded that the collection expansion program has largely contributed to increasing the scale of the exhibition program. Searching for new contexts for Institutional Collections is an important element of the strategy that allows you to build on resources while constantly creating a new framework for them.
